In this lesson students are encouraged to explore
how Patrick Hughes presents an original painted
artwork that depicts a series of doors with distant
landscape imagery. At first glance, the piece may
look like a row of bookshelves lined with images of real books. However, due to the interactive nature of the piece, one will note that as one begins to move around the piece, the ways in which viewers can approach and interact with the piece are infinite. Doors can swing open or shut, the landscape can be revealed or concealed, the book cases can even appear to rotate. In keeping with the artists’ intent, one can approach anything in life with the attitude of: “it all depends on how you look at it.” Thus, within this lesson, the student is encouraged to look within and reflect on their own life in order to ask the bigger question of: “it all depends on how you look at it.”
